Brief Description
Annual Coroner Training
Full Description
South Dakota county coroners are invited to attend the County Coroner Training Program, designed to provide practical, relevant instruction while meeting the training requirements established by the South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Standards Commission.

Whether you are beginning your service as a county coroner or returning for required in-service training, this program is intended to provide more than simply required training hours. Participants will have an opportunity to strengthen their knowledge of death investigation and death registration, examine practical issues encountered by coroners, interact with subject-matter experts, and share experiences with coroners and other professionals from across South Dakota.

The program provides the required training hours outlined in South Dakota Administrative Rules 2:07:01:01 and 2:07:01:02 and is appropriate for both newly selected and experienced county coroners.

Newly Selected County Coroners are required to complete an approved curriculum consisting of at least 16 hours of training. Required subject areas include:

• Death scene investigation
• Death registration

This program will provide newly selected coroners with foundational knowledge and practical information necessary to perform their responsibilities effectively and meet the state's initial training requirement.

Incumbent County Coroners are required to complete at least eight hours of advanced or refresher training. Required subject areas include:

• Death scene investigation
• Death registration

The program provides experienced coroners an opportunity to refresh essential skills, receive updated information, discuss current practices, and learn from other professionals involved in death investigation and registration.

Training Records and Reporting

County coroners are responsible for reporting their training hours by December 31 of each even-numbered year. Each coroner must also maintain training records and make those records available for inspection by the Commission.

New Coroners: Complete the required 16-hour training program.
Incumbent Coroners: Complete required advanced or refresher training and stay current on practices affecting the coroner's office.
