Brief Description
An Integrated Human Performance Framework For De-Escalation.
Full Description
Built on the merging of communication, rapid behavioral assessment, and tactical decision-making considerations.

This de-escalation training course is designed for law enforcement, public safety, and professional personnel involved in managing interpersonal conflict. It provides science-based strategies to recognize, assess, and respond effectively during dynamic, high-stress encounters. The program equips participants with the knowledge, skills, and evidence-based frameworks needed to apply, strengthen, and teach realistic de-escalation strategies across a wide range of operational environments.

Grounded in behavioral science research on human performance under stress, the course develops practical skills in tactical decision-making, rapid behavioral assessment, and professional communication. Participants learn how to apply these principles to support effective, situationally appropriate de-escalation when a meaningful human connection can be established—while maintaining safety, authority, and operational effectiveness.

The course will use research and input from a group of experts to teach the following concepts and more:

Define Realistic De-Escalation and identify when it is appropriate or inappropriate, based on situational context.

Apply the Response-Ability Zone and the 9 T’s framework to assess risk, determine tactical options, and guide de-escalation strategies.

Use the Thought | Emotion | Behavior (TEB) Profile to assess subject behavior and select appropriate communication and persuasion techniques.

Examine how officer self-regulation and emotional control support rational decision-making and effective de-escalation.

Evaluate use-of-force encounters to determine whether de-escalation was a feasible option using behavioral and situational analysis.

Consider the risks and benefits of achieving cooperation and forcing compliance while achieving lawful objectives.

Integrate human performance research into de-escalation tactics.
