Brief Description
40-hour Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Training Class
Full Description

The Sioux Falls Police Department, in conjunction with the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office, NAMI South Dakota and Southeastern Behavioral Healthcare, will be hosting a 40-hour Crisis Intervention Team certification course April 27- May 1, 2026.  The course will be five, eight-hour days, with each day beginning at 0800hrs.  Training will be held at the Public Safety Campus, 4400 East 60th Street North, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

A Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) is designed to improve the outcomes of police interactions with people with mental illness and/or in a mental crisis.  CIT is a collaborative effort, not just a training program.  Officers are trained to prevent and de-escalate crisis situations and divert jail stays and mental holds when feasible. CIT is effective when law enforcement, the mental health system and advocates work to make sure that the treatment system can provide appropriate treatment.

The training will include an explanation of mental illness as it relates to adults, adolescents and the aged.  There will also be site visits, de-escalation and scenario-based training, an overview of available resources and information on co-occurring disorders.  This training is based on the Memphis Model and will certify officers as CIT trained according to SDCL 27A-10-20.

The cost for this week-long training is $120.00.  (Lunch is included in the cost and will be served four of the five training days.)  To register please send an e-mail to the CIT Coordinator, Tarah Walton, at Tarah.Walton@siouxfalls.gov.  Please include your name, agency, agency address and contact telephone number.  Payment for the course may be made out to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), in Sioux Falls and an invoice will be sent to you upon receipt and confirmation of registration.  (An email with class instruction will also be sent approximately one month before the training date.) The class will be capped at 25 students, so space for these sessions is limited.  If you have questions, please feel free to contact any of the following:
